In preparation for a fabulous Derby Party I've complied a list of the traditional essentials which are simple DIY projects and easy items to find locally. A Kentucky Derby Party is never complete without Mint Juleps, Red Roses, a horse figurine and the most appropriately themed food, take a look at some of my favorite picks.
The Official Kentucky Derby recipe for the Early Times Mint Julep is as follows:
2 Cups Sugar
2 Cups Water
Sprigs of Fresh Mint
Crushed Ice
Early Times Kentucky Bourbon
Silver Julep Cups
Mix and add a mint leaf to garnish...Beautiful!!
This Run for the Roses is the most exciting two minutes of sports all year. Bring in the festive spirit by adding vases of red roses throughout your party. A simple low vase with a ribbon for decoration holding a small bouquet of roses is simple yet elegant on a white table cloth. Very Derby-esque!
Sweet treats arranged according to theme always thrill your guests. This tiered dessert arrangement is easily put together and a fun festive way to display and serve food at your party.
Find tips on how to make the ribbon roses, and horse figurine here.
Each of these ideas are totally adaptable to your own party and are just a few ways that we can bring the Run for the Roses into our own backyards.
Such a special race deserves celebrating and recognition not only for the tradition but for all the hard work and skill that it takes to race. So lets watch the most exciting race dressed in our southern best, donning our sun hats, and sipping our Mint Juleps...may the best horse win!!
