I stumbled across this article today and thought it was really interesting. The American Quarter horse, close to our hearts and used for a variety of purposes, is quite a special breed. For many many years we've admired these horses for their speed, agility, calmness and overall practicality for all of our horse related needs. But there is something inherently different about this breed that adds even more value...
Dr. Scott Dindot, from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary, looked at the genetic sequencing of a Quarter horse and compared it to that of a Thoroughbred. He found that "Quarter horse[s] had more genetic variation -- especially in genes involved in sensory perception, immunity, and cellular processes". Read more about his work and discovery here.
